Glass, or the window around it?
Six faults sorted, because glass problems and window problems get quoted together far too often.
| What it is doing | Which service | Why that one |
|---|---|---|
| The slab catches, drags or will not close | Door repair | The slab or its hinges have moved. Adjustment, not a new door. |
| The key turns hard, or the bolt will not throw | Door lock repair | Cylinder, latch or strike. Usually alignment rather than a broken lock. |
| The jamb is soft, split or pulling away | Door frame repair | The frame is the problem, and a new slab in a bad frame solves nothing. |
| The slab is warped through or rotted beyond repair | Door replacement | The one case where a new door is honestly the cheaper answer. |
| A patio door drags or will not lock | Sliding glass door repair | Rollers and track, almost always. The frame stays. |
| A storm or screen door bangs, sags or has torn mesh | Screen door repair | Closers, hinges, latches and mesh — its own assembly entirely. |
Scope
Where glass work stops
Four boundaries worth knowing before anybody measures anything.
Defogging
Drilling and venting a sealed unit clears the view without restoring the seal or the gas fill. We do not offer it, and we would rather lose the job than sell it as a repair.
Whole-window replacement
Not something we do. If the sash around the glass has genuinely failed, we will say so and tell you who to call.
Shower and interior glass
Different service, different page. Shower enclosures have their own hardware, seals and hard-water problems.
Same-hour glass
Nobody can do it honestly. Glass is cut to your opening, so this is a measure-then-fit job and we will give you a real date.
Why we repair windows
Five reasons the glass is the only thing that needs doing
And one structural reason to believe us when we say so.
One component has failed
A window is a frame, a sash, glazing, a mechanism, a lock and a seal. Almost always exactly one has stopped working, and the other five are fine.
The frame is the expensive part
And it is the part that virtually never fails. Press it — if the timber is firm and the opening is sound, you are being quoted for something that is not broken.
Parts are available and cheap
Cords, balances, keepers, weatherstrip and glazing units are all stocked items. The labour is a couple of hours.
Replacement rarely pays back in a reasonable time
Especially where the actual fault is air leakage, which is fixable for a fraction of the cost with a lock that pulls tight and new weatherstrip.
We do not sell replacement windows
Doors, yes — that is on our price list and we say so plainly. Windows, no. So when we tell you yours is repairable, there is nothing in it for us either way.
Worth being precise about this, because our price list is not uniform: we fit replacement doors and we do not fit replacement windows. If your window genuinely needs replacing we will say so and tell you who to call, and we will not quote it.
Nebraska conditions
How glass fails in Nebraska
Hail does most of it, and not always in the obvious way.
Hail that breaks, and hail that does not
Nebraska is in the heart of hail country. Large stones crack glass and punch screens; smaller ones pit and chip and can shock a sealed unit's perimeter seal without marking the pane. That second kind fogs up months later with no obvious cause.
Wind-driven debris
On open ground there is a great deal of loose material available — gravel, branches, equipment. Most wind damage to glass here is something hitting it rather than the wind itself.
Thermal stress
Strong sun on part of a pane with the rest shaded by a deep eave or a storm panel. The differential is enough to split glass with nothing touching it, and people assume vandalism.
A very wide annual range
Sealed units hold two panes and a gas fill together through humid ninety-degree Julys and sub-zero Januarys. That cycling is why so many fail well inside the life the glass was sold with.
Questions
Glass questions
Will a foggy window clear up on its own?
No. The seal has failed and moisture is permanently inside the cavity. It looks better on dry days, which is why people second-guess it.
Do I need a new window if the glass broke?
Almost never. The sash and frame are usually sound and the glass is a replaceable component.
Can you replace the glass the same day?
No, and nobody honestly can. Glass is cut to your opening. We measure on the first visit and fit on the second.
Could hail have caused our fogging?
Very possibly, even if nothing cracked. If several windows on one elevation fogged some months after a storm, that is the likely story.
My window cracked and nothing hit it.
Thermal stress, almost certainly. Sun across a partly shaded pane is a common cause here.
Will you provide paperwork for a claim?
Yes — written, itemised quotes and invoices formatted to submit without rewriting.
