Sliding Glass Door Repair
Four small wheels carry the whole panel. When they go, the door stops rolling and starts dragging, and the track underneath pays for it every time you open it.

Patio door, or one of the others?
Sliders have their own hardware and their own failure pattern. Six faults sorted.
| What it is doing | Which service | Why that one |
|---|---|---|
| The slab catches, drags or will not close | Door repair | The slab or its hinges have moved. Adjustment, not a new door. |
| The key turns hard, or the bolt will not throw | Door lock repair | Cylinder, latch or strike. Usually alignment rather than a broken lock. |
| The jamb is soft, split or pulling away | Door frame repair | The frame is the problem, and a new slab in a bad frame solves nothing. |
| The slab is warped through or rotted beyond repair | Door replacement | The one case where a new door is honestly the cheaper answer. |
| A storm or screen door bangs, sags or has torn mesh | Screen door repair | Closers, hinges, latches and mesh — its own assembly entirely. |
| A shower door drips, drags or will not seal | Shower door repair | Rollers, pivots, seals and hard-water damage. Interior glass work. |
Scope
Where slider repair stops
Four boundaries, and the first one is the one that decides how many visits it takes.
Cracked or fogged panels
That is glass work, measured and ordered. Everything mechanical we finish on the first visit; glass follows on a second.
The screen door
It shares the opening but it is its own assembly, with its own rollers, latch and mesh. We do it at the same time, but it is a separate line.
Structural sill damage
Where water standing in the sill has rotted or corroded the structure beneath, that is beyond dressing or capping and we will say so.
Whole-door replacement
We fit replacement doors where they are needed, but a patio slider almost never is. Rollers and a capped track cost a fraction.
Repair or replace
Five checks before anyone quotes you a new patio door
Sliders attract replacement quotes faster than anything else in a house, and four of these five point back at hardware.
Does it get easier if you lift it?
If so, the rollers have collapsed and the panel is riding on the rail. That is a roller job and nothing more.
Is the rail grooved?
Run a fingernail along it. Grooves mean the track needs capping as well, and new wheels alone will be flat again within a season.
Is the frame square?
Check the reveal top and bottom. A square frame with worn hardware is a repair every time. A racked frame is the rare genuine replacement case.
Does the sill drain?
Pour a cup of water in the track. Standing water is why rails distort in a Nebraska freeze, and it is clearable.
Is the glass sound?
Cracked or fogged panels are replaced in the frame. The panel is not the door, and it does not take the door with it.
We fit replacement doors, so there is nothing in it for us to talk you out of one. On patio sliders we almost always do anyway, because the economics are not close.
Nebraska conditions
What Nebraska does to a patio door
Grit, ice and wind on the biggest opening in the house.
Grit and ice melt in the track
Months of treated pavement and gravel drives, walked straight into the channel, where it mixes with old lubricant into an abrasive paste. It is the leading cause of early roller failure in this state.
Ice in a blocked sill
Nebraska cycles above and below freezing repeatedly. Water standing in a sill that cannot drain freezes, expands and distorts the rail, and then somebody forces the frozen panel and bends it further.
Wind pressure on a large panel
A patio door is the biggest flat surface on most houses and plains wind pushes on it hard. Sustained pressure finds every weakness in a worn interlock.
Blowing snow at the closing edge
Ground blizzards drive fine snow horizontally. A dropped panel with hardened interlock gaskets will pack snow into the closing edge, and that meltwater ends up on your floor.
Questions
Patio door questions
Is it the rollers or the track?
Do the lift test and run a fingernail along the rail. Easier when lifted plus a smooth rail means rollers. Grooves mean both.
Can a worn track be repaired?
Yes. A stainless cap over the damaged rail gives new rollers a hard, true surface at a fraction of replacing the door.
My door will not lock.
Usually the panel has dropped so the latch sits below the keeper. Resetting the height normally restores the lock with no new hardware.
My door is frozen shut.
Let it thaw. Forcing a frozen panel bends the rail and cracks glass, and the real fault is the blocked drainage that let water sit there.
Water comes in at the bottom in heavy rain.
Blocked weep channels. Pour a cup in the track — if it sits, that is your answer.
Would you ever replace a patio door?
Rarely, and only for a racked frame or structural sill damage. We fit replacements, so we have no reason to avoid saying when one is needed.
