Lock, door or frame?
These three get blamed for each other constantly. The symptom usually tells you which.
| What it is doing | Which service | Why that one |
|---|---|---|
| The slab catches, drags or will not close | Door repair | The slab or its hinges have moved. Adjustment, not a new door. |
| The jamb is soft, split or pulling away | Door frame repair | The frame is the problem, and a new slab in a bad frame solves nothing. |
| The slab is warped through or rotted beyond repair | Door replacement | The one case where a new door is honestly the cheaper answer. |
| A patio door drags or will not lock | Sliding glass door repair | Rollers and track, almost always. The frame stays. |
| A storm or screen door bangs, sags or has torn mesh | Screen door repair | Closers, hinges, latches and mesh — its own assembly entirely. |
| A shower door drips, drags or will not seal | Shower door repair | Rollers, pivots, seals and hard-water damage. Interior glass work. |
Scope
Where lock repair stops
Four things people ring us about that are genuinely somebody else's trade, and we would rather say so up front.
Rekeying and key cutting
Locksmith work. We repair and align locks; we do not cut keys or change cylinders to a new key, and we will point you to somebody who does.
Lockouts
Also a locksmith. If you are standing outside your house right now, we are not the right call.
Smart locks and access control
Electronic locks, keypads, fobs and anything networked. We can adjust the door they are fitted to, but the device itself is a specialist job.
Certified exit hardware
Panic bars and anything life-safety rated on a commercial building needs somebody qualified to certify it.
Repair or replace
When a lock genuinely needs replacing
Most do not. These are the cases where new hardware is the right answer rather than the easy one.
The cylinder is worn, not dirty
A key that wobbles in the keyway and turns inconsistently has worn internally. Cleaning and lubricating a worn cylinder buys weeks, not years.
The spindle or return spring has gone
A handle that spins freely or will not spring back is mechanically finished. That is a replacement handle set, not an adjustment.
The bolt is bent
Usually after a forced entry or years of being thrown against a misaligned strike. A bent bolt will not seat properly whatever you do to the strike.
The hardware is not fit for the door
A light interior latch on a heavy exterior door, or a strike fixed with short screws into trim. Both are common and both are a security problem rather than a wear problem.
Everything else is alignment
Which is the point. If the mechanism works in your hand but not in the door, the door or the strike moved and the lock is blameless.
We fit replacement hardware when it is worn out and we realign it when it is not, and we will show you which yours is by taking the lock off the door and working it in your hand.
Nebraska conditions
Why Nebraska locks stop working
Movement, dry air and cold, in that order.
Seasonal movement puts the strike out
Nebraska runs from humid summers to very dry winters, and the door and frame move several millimetres across that range. A strike set in July can be out of register by February, which is why so many doors here lock easily for only half the year.
Loess settlement moves it further
Where the ground has settled, the whole opening shifts and the bolt stops meeting its mortice. The lock is the symptom; the house is the cause.
Cold thickens the lubricant
Below zero, grease in a cylinder or latch stiffens and a marginal mechanism stops throwing cleanly. A lock that was stiff in October will fail outright in a January cold snap.
Dust from field and road
Agricultural and gravel-road dust works into keyways and lock bodies across rural Nebraska. People read a gritty key turn as a worn-out lock when it is usually a cleaning job.
Questions
Lock questions
I have to lift the door to lock it.
The slab has dropped and the bolt sits below the strike. The lock is fine. Hinge repair and strike alignment fix it.
Do you rekey locks or do lockouts?
No. We are a repair and alignment service rather than a locksmith, and we will tell you that rather than take the job.
My locks work in spring but not in late summer.
Seasonal timber movement, and on a settled house ground movement on top of it. The strike can be set to work across the range rather than at one point in it.
Can you make my doors more secure?
Yes. Reinforced strike plates with long fixings into framing rather than trim make a measurable difference and cost very little.
The key turns but nothing happens.
The spindle or the latch tailpiece has stripped. That is genuine hardware replacement rather than adjustment.
Is a lock worth a call-out on its own?
Yes, and we are happy to come. Mention anything else while we are there, because most of the cost is the visit.
